Ashburn is a collection of modern subdivisions built atop mostly flat former cattle range land. Ashburn Village and Ashburn Farm are the twin 1980s-90s era planned subdivisions which form the heart of the mid range housing area.

Newcomers are welcomed into a hothouse of education and technology focused lifestyles.In stark contrast to Loudoun County’s historic rural areas, unincorporated Ashburn is very future oriented. During the 2000s housing boom, the Dulles airport area experienced a luxury housing construction boom with development surrounding the Village and Farm growing to include the golf course community of Belmont on the north and large planned communities of Broadlands and Brambleton on the south.

Ashburn VA is modern and sees itself as high tech. Data centers are an ongoing business attraction and continue to construct and open at a rapid clip, taking advantage of the physical communications infrastructure developed by early Ashburn internet pioneers AOL and MCI/Worldcom (now Verizon). A Central Business District is planned for Ashburn surrounding the end line metro station of the Dulles MetroRail Silver line.

High density office, apartments and ground floor retail are approved and awaiting the arrival of the trains in the late 2010s.
